Even though I am out and about, I am keeping up on my pottery skills. I found a pottery studio here in Wilmington, North Carolina, called Bookworm Pottery & Co. filled with fun people who have incredible skills.
When I was looking for a place to play with clay, I stopped in to check it out. I was greeted by Alyssa, a kind, vivacious newbie to the pottery world. She started classes a year ago, and fell in love with pottery. Now she works at the studio, even leading some classes. Her enthusiasm about both pottery and the Bookworm Pottery & Co. studio sold me. I signed up for a six-week class so I could play on the wheel, work on my own during open studio time, and try some new structures.
I have created a lidded jar before creating a closed structure and then cutting when it is leather hard to create a lid. I tried something new at Bookworm, pulling the lid from the top of the clay body, removing it, and then creating the jar from the rest of the clay body. The first photo is before they are fired and glazed.I really like that technique, and plan to use it more!
Another new creation for me is the coffee pour over, though mine ended up pretty small. I’m not sure it is tall enough for coffee, but it could be used as a tea pour over I guess. At the same session, I created a mug to pair with the pour over, but the bottom was too thin. I loved the shape, so I cut the bottom out and glazed it anyway. Not sure what I will use it for… Maybe a candle holder?
The play with clay continued and I created a mug and two bowls. The other photos are the completed pieces.
